Freed seaman closes six figure deal from her Iranian experience April 9, 2007

The BBC reports that one of the UK’s Royal Navy captured by Iran and then released 13 days later, is making money by selling her story to the media:

Leading Seaman Faye Turney has told how she “felt like a traitor” when she was forced to write “confession” letters shown on Iranian television.

The only woman among the 15-strong Royal Navy crew has also defended her decision to sell her story to ITV1’s Trevor Macdonald and the Sun newspaper.

Some of the reported six-figure sum for the interview will go to navy families.

The paper’s defence editor, Tom Newton-Dunn, who refused to reveal how much she was being paid, said: “She has a right to do this. We are a free country. Faye has been through the most extraordinary ordeal, which is clearly graphically illustrated.”

It’s interesting that the story was bought by The Sun, one of the UK’s leading tabloid newspapers owned by Rupert Murdoch, and made famous by ‘Page 3’, where they display a naked women every day.

It’s no secret that Murdoch is pro-Israel, pro-war, and uses his media empire to enforce these views. In the UK, The Sun and The Times newspapers are his main media properties, and both frequently engage in Islam-bashing, using every opportunity to attack Muslims and Islam.

In the US, Murdoch’s empire includes The New York Post which is known for its unwavering support of Israel and constant Islam-bashing. Many years ago, Muslim merchants began boycotting the paper due to it’s anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, anti-Palestine bias.

Also included is the FOX News TV channel, which frequently has TV shows about Islam which are always badly researched and take things out of context to further their own causes.

Interestingly, Discovery Channel also seems to be engaging in airing many TV shows supporting the war, or attacking Islam. Along with others, the channel is owned by Liberty Media Corporation, which is an investor in Murdoch’s News Corporation and clearly shares his political views.

With such powerful media forces at play backed by virtually unlimited wealth, it’s obvious why The Sun newspaper is willing to pay six figures for this story, and it’s clear that Ms Turney will say whatever needs to be said to get her money. I’d be surprised if the story contains any truth, and serves any other purpose other than Islam-bashing and to try and persuade the British public for a war with Iran.

CIA torture Iranian diplomat April 7, 2007

The BBC reports that an Iranian diplomat freed last week claims that that his CIA captors tortured him. It wouldn’t be surprising; the US has a history of violating human rights, as previously stated.

The statement of Whitehouse spokesman, Gordon Johndroe, is amusing:

This is just the latest theatrics of a government trying to deflect attention away from its own unacceptable actions

The irony of this statement is hilarious, coming from the spokesman of a government that invaded one country and wrecked it (Afghanistan), so it invaded another to deflect attention away from this, and made an even bigger mess (Iraq), and is now trying to deflect attention away from that, and get support for a war on Iran.

Oh, and not one of the British sailors released by Iran was tortured. The US could learn a thing or two from the Iranians about how to treat captives.
